About The Author:

KD Abhyankar (1928-2007) was Emeritus Professor, Department of Astronomy, Osmania University, Hyderabad, where he served as Professor of Astronomy for 24 years. A PhD in astronomy from the University of California, Berkeley, he has 30 years of teaching experience. Dr Abhyankar served on major committees and councils in various capacities in India and abroad. He was a member of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, member of the International Astronomical Union, fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, elected member of the Sigma Xi of USA, and elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences as well as of the Indian National Science Academy. Professor Abhyankar delivered several talks and lectures and attended many important national and international meetings. A prolific writer, he edited four volumes, contributed chapters to books, and published several articles. He contributed over 100 papers in several leading national and international journals. In recognition of his services to astronomy, Professor Abhyankar was conferred the MP Birla Memorial Award 2001 instituted by the Birla Institute of Fundamental Research, Kolkata.
