Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941)
The youngest son of Debendranath Tagore and Saradadevi. Rabindranath Tagore, one of the greatest Bengali Indian poets of all time was born on May 7, 1861 at Jorasanko in a rich and cultured family in Calcutta. He had his early education at The Oriental Seminary and Metropolitan Institution. The formal school education did not suit him, so he continued his studies under Private tutors. Thereafter he went to England for higher studies.
Tagore began writing poems ever since his very early childhood. In 1913 he was awarded the Nobel Prize for his outstanding creation “Gitanjali” (Song offerings).
Tagore was a versatile genius. Besides being a poet, he was a great novelist, short story writer, play writer, music composer, painter, patriot and educationist and above all a humanist. He founded the Visva Bharati at Santiniketan in 1902.
This Nobel laureate breathed his last on 7th August 1941.
